New Center for Research on Foundations of Statistical Inference
04-08-2009

The Department of Statistics is pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for Research on Foundations of Statistical Inference by Professor Chuanhai Liu. This new departmental center will focus its research efforts on the foundations of statistical inference.
Professor Chuanhai Liu recently became interested in doing research on foundations of statistical inference. He has been collaborating with Professor Arthur P. Dempster at Harvard and Glenn Shafer at Rutgers, the founders of what is now known as the Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions. In the last few years, Professor Liu and collaborators have been working on applications of the Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory. He and his collaborators at Purdue have proposed new methods, called weak and maximal beliefs, to create DS models that have desired frequency properties. Most recently, he is working with Ph.D. candidate Jianchun Zhang and Professor Jun Xie on analysis of SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) sequences using their methods.
