Norma Lucas

Norma started her employment in the Department of Statistics in May 1970. In January 1971 Norma stepped in as the interim "head secretary" to Shanti Gupta, Head of the Department, and remained his assistant for 25 years until he stepped down as Head in 1995. She continued in the position when the new Head, Mary Ellen Bock, began in 1995 and remained in the position until her retirement from the University.
In 2004 Norma received the "Special Merit Award" given for exceptional service outside of one's job responsibilities. She was also the United Way Captain for the Department of Statisitcs for 20 years getting an almost perfect 100% return on pledge cards every year.
Throughout Norma's employment with the Department, her service, dedication and loyalty were exceptional. She helped to make the Department a collegial and nurturing environment and she is remembered fondly by everyone who has been a member of the Department during her employment.
Norma retired from the Department of Statistics in August 2009 after 39 years.
