Graduate Student Organization

The purpose of the GSO is to encourage student interaction while enhancing the educational experience within the Department of Statistics. The GSO accomplishes these goals via the mentoring program, monthly seminars, an invited speaker in the spring, and a variety of social events. A five member committee along with a Purdue Graduate Student Government (PGSG) senator forms the GSO.

The mentoring program was established to provide additional support for the incoming students. Mentors are graduate students in the Department of Statistics that have been here for a year or more and have volunteered to participate in the mentoring program. Each new student has been assigned a person to serve as their mentor. The mentor is a source of information and a friendly guide.

The GSO hosts monthly seminars during the academic year. The seminars are held in the evening and pizza or other treats are provided. There will be e-mails and flyers announcing the speaker and topic of each seminar. In addition to these monthly seminars, the GSO invites a "big name" speaker each spring. The speakers are invited to give a seminar and meet with graduate students.

Social events are held throughout the year. Members enjoy movie nights and going out to dinner. If you have any suggestions for social events, please contact one of the GSO officers. In the spring, GSO holds its annual picnic. Happy Hollow was the venue for last year’s picnic and everyone had a great time playing softball and volleyball.

The role of the PGSG senate is to communicate graduate student needs to the University administration. Our PGSG senator provides two services to the Statistics graduate students. Firstly, he serves on a committee within the PGSG senate. Secondly, he acts as a liaison between PGSG and the Department of Statistics.

The GSO provides a number of rewarding activities each year. We hope that all the graduate students will take part in these activities. If anyone has any questions or comments for the GSO, please contact us at gso-officers@stat.purdue.edu
