Statistical Consulting Service

Purdue's Statistical Consulting Service (SCS) provides students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the application of statistics that is typically not available in the classroom. This includes the process of developing a statistical framework to address a research question, communicating with clients, managing consulting sessions, and writing summary reports. In addition, because the service is offered to everyone at Purdue, students encounter a broad range of problems and thus gain hands-on experience with a large number of statistical methods.
STATCOM
Statistics in the Community ( STATCOM ) is an entirely student-run service in the Department of Statistics that provides free statistical consulting to local governments and non-profit organizations. In addition to serving their community, students gain valuable experience in areas including statistical consulting, leadership, management, oral and written communication with the general public, quality control, and grant writing. Presentation of work at statistical meetings increases the opportunities for professional development.
STATCOM's model for integrating service learning into graduate statistical education has been so successful at Purdue University that it is being used to develop similar programs at other colleges and universities and at the professional level within the American Statistical Association (ASA).
