Emeritus Professor Steve Samuels: 1938-2012

07-30-2012

Emeritus Professor Steve Samuels passed away July 26, 2012 after a long battle with lung cancer. Steve was born in New York (Brooklyn) and grew up on Long Island. He did his undergraduate work at MIT, received his Ph. D. from Stanford, joined the Purdue faculty in 1963 (Mathematics), and was one of the original members of the Department of Statistics (originating in 1968). He is well known for his work in optimal stopping and "the secretary problem", and headed many important committees both at Purdue and in the broader statistical community. Although Steve retired in 2003 after 40 years as a faculty member in both Statistics and Mathematics he remained active in the department and was a loved member of the Wednesday night poker game.
