Abstract:

The modeling of random effects has followed different developments in different areas of application. In particular, the definition of a random effect used by an animal scientist can be different from the random effect used by a plant scientist. This distinction was one that intrigued Professor Myra Samuels. In this talk the different interpretations of random effects are explained. In particular, the definitions of random effects are related to the familiar statistical methodologies of mixed model analysis and blocking designs. We will see that the different interpretations of random effects have consequences on both the scope of the model and the types of conclusions that are possible.
