Peter Mueller

Peter Mueller was born in Vienna, Austria. He attended the University of Wien in Austria as an undergraduate and Masters student; majoring in, initially, applied computer science and then later in math and physics education. Professor Mueller arrived to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar after taking advice from one of his professors who advised him to try Statistics. Peter entered Purdue University in the Fall of 1986 for his studies in the Department of Statistics.

Professor Mueller received his Ph.D. in 1991 from the Department of Statistics under the direction of Professor James Berger. The title of his Ph.D. work was "Numerical Integration in Bayesian Statistics." Currently, Peter is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas, Austin. He is a member of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the International Society for Bayesian Analysis.

Professor Mueller's favorite memory of Purdue is, "first and foremost, a great statistics department." He enjoyed his graduate student life and felt that there was a good graduate student community (beyond statistics) at that time. He also met his wife, Gautami Shah, at Purdue. She was a graduate student in Anthropology.
