1991 Distinguished Alumnus Robert J. Lundegard

Dr. Lundegard graduated from Purdue University with the M.S in Statistics in 1952 and his Ph.D. in Statistics in 1956. He is Chief of the Statistical Engineering Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Before joining the NIST, Dr. Lundegard had a distinguished career in the Office of Naval Research, where in 1979 he became Deputy Director, responsible for planning and assessment. In 1982 he became the first Director of the Navy's Cost Analysis Division, where he led the effort to analyze and control the cost of major ship, aircraft, and weapons acquisition. Since his 1987 appointment as Chief of the NIST's Statistical Engineering Division, he has been credited with revitalizing the NIST's research program and strengthening its work in statistical computing through collaboration with other scientific computing groups at the Institue. He has initiated a program on "design for quality" to encourage the use of statistically designed experiments in the work of NIST laboratories that collaborate with industry to improve the quality and productivity of American manufacturing.
