Astrostatistics at Purdue

The history of statistics is intimately tied to that of astronomy; at the same time, the need for data sophistication continually pushes the potential of both fields as data becomes more voluminous and astrophysical models become more sophisticated. Astrostatistics addresses the unique problems posed by interpreting astrophysical data catalogued across the spectrum. Ultimately, a statistical relationship with astrophysical and cosmological data will lead to new insights from existing theories, increased precision in data collection, validation and refinement of underlying models, and finally increased efficacy in observation experimentation.
