Course Description
Statistics 511 is a comprehensive introduction to
probability and statistical methods for students in engineering and science. It
provides a strong foundation for more advanced statistical courses. The emphasis
is on the understanding of basic ideas, theories and methodologies. No
statistical software packages are required in this course, although their
outputs will be used to facilitate teaching and learning occasionally. The
prerequisite is at least one year of calculus.

Sciences, 8th or 9th edition, Duxbury (required).
- Please do not use the international version.

Homework
All will be from the textbook except the first one.
Exams
Open-book and open notes.
Makeup: must be pre-approved at least one week before the official exam time. Students cannot decide it by themselves. The instructor can deny a makeup exam if it is not pre-approved. At least 20% deduction if a student does not follow the rule.
Emergency events will be considered.
Course Requirements and Grades
The final grade has the following
components:
- Homework (20%) will be posted on the course web page mostly. No late due is accepted and solutions will be available soon after due. The lowest score will be dropped.
- Midterm (35%). Time: two hours. Therw will be 2 extra points.
- Final (40%) on Final Week. There will be 2 extra points.
- Course Evaluation (5%): please forward your receipt.
Final Grade will consider the rank in the class. Initially, it is
A (A- to A+): 90-100; B (B- to B+): 80-90; C (C- to C+): 70-80; D (D- to D+): 60-70; F: below 60.
The criterion could be lower but not higher.
