Abstract:

Nanoscale structures and high resolution microscopy have provided both engineers and scientists with a plethora of opportunities to explore biology. Using simple nanomaterials we will show that highly sensitive detection is possible almost at the limit of single molecule resolution. To this end, we will show that Plasmon nanorulers can be used to monitor mRNA in live single cells. These concepts can also be used to detect microRNA as well as protein DNA interactions in live cells. A second example that I would like to focus on involves detecting epigenetic modifications at single nucleosome resolution and in single cell. Highly sensitive methodologies can be used to enhance our understanding of biology which can lead to detecting a disease early in its formation or in detecting targets that otherwise are not possible by conventional means. I will conclude the talk with some perspectives and future implications.
