STAT 503 - Course Outline

  1. Descriptive Statistics: frequency distributions; measures of center; measures of dispersion

  2. Foundations of Inference:random sampling; probability; binomial distributions; normal distribution; sample distributions

  3. Introduction to Estimation: standard error; confidence interval for single mean and for difference between means

  4. Introduction to Hypothesis Testing: P-value and statistical significance; power; two-sample t-test, Mann-Whitney test

  5. Experimental Design: control; randomization; blocking

  6. Analysis of Paired Data: t-test and confidence interval; sign test

  7. Analysis of Categorical Data: confidence interval for a proportion; chi-square goodness-of-fit test; contingency tables.

  8. One-way Analysis of Variance (with a global F test)

  9. Regression and Correlation: simple linear regression; standard error of regression slope; interpreting correlation

  10. Exams
