Datasets for STAT 301
Disclaimer: On this page you'll find the datasets for Moore & McCabe's
book. These datasets are available from the CDROM accompanying the
book; they are provided here only for convenience for those who are taking
STAT 301 at Purdue University.
Datasets for each chapter are in the following folders.
Instructions on how to find and open the datasets
There are mainly 3 kinds of dataset file names in each chapter, for
example, eg01_009.sav, ex02_021.sav, and ta07_005.sav.
eg01_009 means example 9, chapter 1,
ex02_021 means exercise 21, chapter 2,
ta07_005 means table 5, chapter 7.
If your computer is set up correctly:
- Click on the data file name.
- You browser will pop up a window asking what to do with this
file. Click on "Open".
- SPSS will show up with contents of the data.
If the above method does not work, try the following steps:
- Right click on the data file name and choose "save target as" to save
it on your Desktop.
- If you have a .sav file and it shows up as a SPSS work sheet icon, you
can double click on it and SPSS will open up.
- If the double click trick does not work, you need to
run SPSS and open the data file from SPSS.
- Start SPSS
- Select menu item File -> Open -> Data
- In "Look in" bar, select "Desktop" (or the directory you just
saved the data)
-
In "Files of type", choose "SPSS (*.sav)"/"SPSS Portable (*.por)" (depends on your file type) or the last one "All files(*.*)".
-
Select the file then click on "Open".
