McCabe Appointed to Institute of Medicine Committee

George McCabe
George McCabe, Professor of Statistics and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Science, has been appointed to be a member of an Institute of Medicine Committee charged with reviewing and providing recommendations to revise the meal patterns and nutrition standards of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The recommendations are to reflect new developments in nutrition science, increase the availability of key food groups in the school meal programs, and allow these programs to better meet the nutritional needs of children, foster healthy eating habits, and safeguard children’s health. The study, sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Service, began in February of this year and is expected to last 24 months.

Professor George McCabe has worked with the Institute of Medicine before; in 1996-1997 working on the committee for International Nutrition and again in 2001-2003 working on the Committee on the Use of Dietary Reference Intakes in Nutrition Labeling. As a member of this committee, he will be attending meetings in Washington D.C.; the first of which he attended last week. We anticipate the results of the committee’s work with the survey and congratulate Professor George McCabe on his appointment.
