Though Professor Emeritus David Moore, the first Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor, is no longer in the classroom, he is still challenging his students. Today, he is challenging alumni and friends of the Department of Statistics to invest in the long-term success of the Department.

Inspired by the appointment of Dr. William Cleveland as the second Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor by the Purdue Board of Trustees, Dr. Moore and his wife, Nancy, have pledged to match the next $100,000 raised to support the Shanti S. Gupta Fund beginning December 1, 2004. "The Moores’ generosity is making it possible for us to continue the tradition of bringing the finest faculty to our students," shares Mary Ellen Bock, Department Head.

Established in 1995, the Shanti S. Gupta Fund supports the Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor in memory of Dr. Gupta, the extraordinary man who founded and led the Department for nearly thirty years.

Since joining the Department in 2004 from Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, Dr. Cleveland has brought to the classroom the modern expertise of a world renowned researcher in data visualization and statistical graphics. Through leading-edge research and a key partnership with the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, Dr. Cleveland and others at Purdue are currently working to improve the quality and reduce the cost of healthcare across the United States and the world.
