Department of Statistics and Department of Mathematics Monday, October 21, 2002 3:30 PM in REC 113 Professor Paul-Andre Monney Visiting Purdue University will speak on Basic Concepts of the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence and the Theory of Hints Abstract These closely related theories form a methodology for reasoning under uncertainty. They provide a sound and general framework for representing uncertain pieces of information and for evaluating specific hypotheses of interest. The essential ingredients of the theory are presented from a constructive point of view, thereby putting some emphasis on the important aspects of model construction and proper mindset. The activity of deriving conclusions regarding a question of interest from the constructed hints is a reasoning process that extends inference schemes commonly found in classical propositional logic. This essential aspect of the theory is realized by Dempster's rule of combination, which brings together logical reasoning and probability theory.
