Events:

Sidney Resnick, Cornell University, was the invited lecturer for the Prem S. Puri Memorial Lecture held on March 22, 2001. The title of his talk was "Infinite Source Poisson Models with Heavy Tailed Transmission Times: Probabilistic Modeling and Data Networks."
Alan Lopez (M.S. 1974) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni
Charles E. McCulloch, University of California, was the invited speaker for the Myra Samuels Memorial Lecture held on April 12, 2001. The title of his talk was "(Re)Modeling Biometrics."
The Department of Statistics established the Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics. This four-course program provides and documents formal expertise in statistics at the graduate level beyond introductory regression courses. The four courses can be used as part of an MS program in Statistics.
Professor Richard Penney became the third director of the Actuarial Science program. He replaced Professor Steve Samuels who served as Director from 1997 - 2000.

John Marden, University of Illinois, Urbana, Chicago, was the invited lecturer for the K.C.S. Pillai Memorial Lecture held on March 21, 2002. The title of his talk was "Iterated Multivariate Ranks - Truly Nonparametric Procedures?"
Deng-Yuan Huang (Ph.D. 1974) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.
John Quackenbush, The Institute for Genomic Research, was the invited lecturer for the Myra Samuels Memorial Lecture held on March 28, 2002. The title of his talk was "Back to the Future: Integrating Expression with Genomic, Genetic, and Metabolic Data."
Professor Seongjoo Song became Assistant Director for the Actuarial Science Program. She served as Assistant Director until 2006.

Events:

The Seventh Purdue International Symposium on Statistics was held June 19-24, 2003.
Rob Tibshirani was the invited lecturer for the Myra Samuels Memorial Lecture held on June 20, 2003. His talk was part of the Seventh International Symposium on Statistics. The title of his talk was "Least Angle Regression, Forward Stagewise and the Lasso."
The number of graduate students grew to about 100 in the fall. A great deal of reshuffling had to occur in the MATH building to house the new faculty and graduate students. Members of the Department were housed on the ground, second, fourth, fifth and tenth floors of the MATH building.

James O. Berger received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Purdue University.

Events:

The Department of Statistics main office and many faculty members move into HAAS Hall after the Department of Computer Science moves into the new Richard & Patricia Lawson Computer Science Building. Many graduate students and faculty still occupied offices on the fifth, second, and ground floors of the MATH building.
The first David S. Moore Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to Catherine Withey. The award is in honor of Professor David S. Moore who retired from the Department of Statistics in 2004.
The first William J. Studden Publication Award was given to Surya Tokdar. The award is in honor of Professor William J. Studden who retired from the Department of Statistics in 2005.
Michaels S. Waterman, University of Southern California, was the invited lecturer for the Myra Samuels Memorial Lecture held on April 13, 2006. The title of his talk was "Whole Genome Optical Mapping."
Michael Stein, University of Chicago, was the invited lecturer for the K.C.S. Pillai Memorial Lecture held on September 21, 2006. The title of his talk was "Statistical models for spatial processes on a global scale."
Diane K. Fasel (M.S. 1972) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.
Professor Frederi Viens became Associate Director of the Actuarial Science program.
