1992

Events:

The fifth Purdue International Symposium on Statistical Decision Theory and Related Topics was held.
The Department had a network consisting of two fileservers, one an IBM RISC/6000 and the other an older Sun, which was upgraded to a 4/280. Connected to the servers were six Sun workstations, 24 X-Windows terminals and one stand-alone IBM RISC/6000 workstation. Faculty, students and staff used the computers. About two dozen "dumb" terminals were still connected to the the servers. These were in graduate student offices. All but two faculty used workstations. The DEC VAX 11/780 was retired.
The Department was a leader in the use of sophisticated statistical software, such as S-Plus and LispStat, symbolic mathematical software, such as Mathematica, and various dialects of TeX.
The first V.L. Anderson Scholarship Award was awarded to Bradley H. Lemons. The award was created in honor of Professor Virgil Anderson who retired from the Department of Statistics in 1986.
Thomas J. Lorenzen (Ph.D. 1977) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.
Professor Carl Cowen was named Director of the Actuarial Science program. He served from 1992 - 1997.
Myra Samuels, Associate Director of the Statistical Consulting Service, passed away on December 23, 1992.

The first Prem S. Puri Memorial Lecture was given on March 18, 1993 by Yuan Shih Chow. The memorial lecture is in honor of Professor Prem S. Puri who was a member of the Purdue faculty in 1966 until his death in 1989. The title of his talk was "Wald's Equation for A Class of Denormalized U-statistics."
Fred C. Leone (Ph.D. 1949) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.

Events:

Shanti S. Gupta stepped down as Head of the Department of Statistics. Professor Mary Ellen Bock assumed duties as Head of the Department making her the first female Department Head in the College of Science.
Conference on Multiple Decision Theory was held June 8 - 10 in honor of Shanti S. Gupta. Professor Gupta was one of the founders of multiple decision theory, and has maintained leadership in the field through an exceptional research and education program. Many of Professor Gupta's Ph.D. students attended.
Intrinsic Bayes Factor Workshop was held on June 10-12. The event involved approximately 20 active researchers in development of intrinsic Bayes factors, a recent and promising methodology applicable to virtually any model selection problem. Professor James O. Berger led the workshop.
2,257 students (43 class sections) enrolled in Statistics courses in the spring semester.
Jerone N. Deverman (Ph.D. 1969) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.
Regina Becker was hired as the Manager of the Statistical Consulting service. She handles the day to day activities of managing the consultants.

David S. Moore was named Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics.
A formal relationship with Purdue's Technical Assistance Program (TAP) was established
First Myra Samuels Memorial Lecture was held on March 22, 1996. Nobel prize winner, Herbert Hauptman, gives the address, "A probabilistic approach to the phase problem of X-ray crystallography." The lectures were founded in memory of Dr. Myra Samuels who worked for many years in the Statistics Department and was an Associate Professor in Veterinary Pathobiology at the time of her death in 1992. The Myra Samuels Biostatistics Fund provides support for the Memorial Lecture.
B.L.S. Prakasa Rao, Indian Statistical Institute, was the invited lecturer for the K.C.S. Pillai Memorial Lecture held on April 12, 1996. The title of his talk was "Spatial Data Analysis."
Donna Brogan (M.S. 1962) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.
Professor Philip Protter became the Associate Director of the Actuarial Science program. He served as Associate Director until 2002.

Professor Bruce S. Weir, North Carolina State University, was the invited lecturer for the Myra Samuels Memorial Lecture held on April 23, 1997. The title of his talk was "A Statistician in Court."
The Myra Samuels Garden was dedicated on April 25, 1997.
Richard E. James (M.S. 1968) was named a Science Distinguished Alumni.
Professor Steve Samuels became the second Director of the Actuarial Science program, replacing Professor Carl Cowen. Professor Samuels served as Director from 1997 - 2000.
Marcel Neuts, University of Arizona, was the invited lecturer for the Prem S. Puri Memorial Lecture held on December 4, 1997. The title of his talk was "Quasi-Birth-and-Death Processes and Queueing Models."
