First L. J. Cote M.S. Excellence in Statistics Award is awarded to Roger A. Klassen. The award was in honor of Professor Louis J. Cote who taught at Purdue University since 1960.

Events:

The Center for Statistical Decision Sciences was created. It fostered research in Bayesian Analysis and Statistical Decision Theory through seminar activities, workshops and conferences. Professors James O. Berger and Shanti S. Gupta served as co-directors.
Boris Berezovsky, one of the super-rich Russion oligarchs, visited Purdue. He was the colloquium speaker on December 3 speaking on "Theory of Choice on Random Sets."
Myra Samuels was hired as Assistant Director of the Statistical Consulting Service.

Actuarial Science major was created jointly between the Department of Statistics and Mathematics.
First Pillai Memorial Lecture was given by C.R. Rao. The lecture was founded in memory of Professor Pillai who joined the Purdue faculty as Professor of Statistics and Mathematics in 1962.
