1970
Events:
- The first Purdue International Symposium on Statistical Decision Theory and Related Topics was held.
- In 1970, Professor George P. McCabe, organized a statistical consulting service funded by the Purdue University Computing Center (PUCC) to continue providing free statistical expertise to the Purdue campus. PUCC funded forty percent of Professor McCabe’s time and two half-time graduate students. The consultants helped researchers design experiments and suggested analytical methods for analyzing their data. Mary Ann Ross, PUCC employee and Psychology graduate student, supervised the statistical computing consultations using SPSS and BMD.

- The I.W. Burr award was established upon the retirement of I.W. Burr, an eminent statistician who taught at Purdue for nearly 35 years. The first award was given in 1975 to Anil K. Bhargava. The award is given to a student who has completed or will complete the Statistics Ph.D and who shows promise of contribution to the field of statistics as evidenced by academic excellence in courses and exams, excellence in teaching or consulting as a Statistics graduate student at Purdue University, and by the quality of the dissertation research.
